The Green Fool

Upstage Theatre Company presents The Green Fool by Patrick Kavanagh. The Green Fool is a multi-layered drama based around the poet’s early autobiography and his later-life response to the book.

Sometime in the mid-1950’s, Patrick Kavanagh, now about 50, revisits the dusty London attic where he wrote his memoir almost twenty years earlier. Now older, wiser but more disillusioned and embittered, he has come to dismiss his first prose publication – despite its immense popularity – as a “stage-Irish lie, written to please the London audience”. Gorman’s play explores the tension between the idealistic and ambitious young writer and his older self, presenting enchanting, lively and often hilarious scenes of an Irish childhood as written down by the younger man, but building to a powerful and deeply moving exploration of the artist growing old, in conflict with himself and at odds with an indifferent society. Time: 8 p.m.

TICKETS: €18 Concession: €16. All tickets Mon 7th €10. BOOKING/INFO: Tel: +353 61 319866. Fax: +353 61 319866. Email: belltabl@iol.ie. Website: www.belltable.ie. VENUE: Belltable Arts Centre, 69 O'Connell St., Limerick.

MY FAIR LADY

The Cecilian Musical Society present MY FAIR LADY. My Fair Lady has always been a favourite with Limerick and Mid-West audiences. This year’s show sees Joe Donnellan return as Professor Higgins with Cecilian debutante Gemma Byrnes playing Eliza. Also featuring prominently will be Padhraic Hastings as Col. Pickering, Peter Kennedy as Alfred P. Doolittle, Eoin Sheedy as Freddy and Phil O’Neill as Mrs. Higgins.

My Fair Lady is a spectacle full of oh-so familiar numbers such as “I Could Have Danced All Night”, “Just You Wait Henry Higgins”, “Why Can’t A Woman Be More Like a Man”, “I’m Getting Married In the Morning”, “With A Little Bit Of Bloomin’ Luck”, “On The Street Where You Live”, “The Ascot Gavotte” and many more.

This year’s show is produced by Peter Kennedy with Musical Direction by Derhaile de Paor and Una Feehan as Chorus Mistress.

Time: at 8pm.

The Diary of Adrian mole age 13 3/4 by Sue Townsend

Bruiser Theatre Company presents Sue Townsend's stage adaptation of her best selling book stays true to it's source, creating a play filled with music and warmth. This comic play covers the first of the Adrian Mole diaries in which the anti-hero adolescent and undiscovered poet and intellectual tries to deal with his parents' crumbling marriage, his spots, his school, his unrequited love for Pandora and the erratic behaviour of his dog. All this whilst trying to get his poetry accepted by the BBC! Adrian Mole faces the same agonies which life sets before most adolescents. The difference, though, between young Master Mole and his peers is that this lad keeps a diary - an earnest chronicle of longing and disaster that has convulsed readers for over 20 years. Time: 8 p.m.

TICKETS: €16 Concession: €14. BOOKING/INFO: Tel: +353 61 319866. Fax: +353 61 319866. Email: belltabl@iol.ie. Website: www.belltable.ie. VENUE: Belltable Arts Centre, 69 O'Connell St., Limerick.

THE FOUR SEASONS BY CANDLELIGHT - RTE NSOI

The Four Seasons by Candlelight is a delightful show which has been enchanting audiences with its glorious music and uniquely elegant staging for over fifteen years.

The Mozart Festival Orchestra, formed by promoter Raymond Gubbay in 1991 to mark the bicentenary of Mozart’s death, regularly performs in venues such as the Barbican Hall, the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Albert Hall in London, where it plays a major part in the annual Raymond Gubbay Christmas Festivals.

For The Four Seasons by Candlelight they will perform an exquisite programme celebrating the most popular music of the 18th century in beautifully authentic costumes of the period and an evocative candle-lit setting.

Conductor Steven Devine returns to direct the UK’s most elegant orchestra in this year’s tour and he is joined by celebrated trumpeters Crispian Steele-Perkins and Tom Rainer to perform favourites by Purcell, Stanley and Vivaldi. Virtuoso violinist David Juritz will perform Vivaldi’s masterpiece The Four Seasons. The line-up for this ever popular programme is completed by the stunning voice of soprano Natasha Jouhl, performing music by Mozart.

Mozart; Symphony No. 35 in D, K385 ('Haffner'). Weber; Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73. Dvorak; Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 ('From the New World'). John Finucane, Clarinet. Gerhard Markson, Conductor.

Frongoch

“Frongoch” is based on the internment of Irish Volunteers at Frongoch prisoner of war camp in North Wales following the 1916 Easter Rising. It was here that Michael Collins rose to prominence. Immediately after the Easter Rising 1,705 Irish men were shipped on cattle boats to a Prisoner Of War Camp in North Wales. These were considered by the British government to be the least dangerous prisoners however they left Frongoch staunch republicans having organised campaigns to further the Irish cause. Frongoch became known as “The University of Revolution.”
