THEATRE & DANCE

Monday 6th - Saturday 10th June 06
The Vagina Monologues

The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler. SFX City Theatre. Staring: Anna Nolan, Pamela Flood and Fenella Fielding. Since it’s debut in 1997, the show has become a unique international phenomenon, wowing enthusiastic audiences all over the world. Based on the book of the same name by Eve Ensler, the monologues are taken from interviews with two thousand women from all over the world. In the hands of the large number of leading actresses who have appeared in the show, Ensler’s words have achieved a new fusion and relevance, resulting in a theatrical experience that is funny, poignant and exhilarating but above all, presents a view of the world that is defiantly female The Vagina Monologues is a show that deals with the politics of sex and of the self, but it is primarily a show of celebration. That celebration takes many forms – most notably through riotous humour but also with an inspiring defiance in the face of all sorts of adversity. 13 June: Irish Academy for Performing Arts – Graduation Performance. Drama: 8pm.

Old Times

Old Times by Harold Pinter. London Classic Theatre Company. “...a brilliantly controlled, tantalizingly enigmatic masterpiece..” - Daily Telegraph.

Deeley, a film-maker, and Kate, his wife of twenty years, live in an isolated farmhouse by the sea. The calm and seclusion of their world is splintered by the arrival of the beautiful Anna, a solitary dinner guest and old friend.

As the trio reminisce, they bring to life the events and echoes of a shared past in 1950‚s London. But memories like these, mixed with desire, can be dangerous. Soon a battle of wills begins, an emotional duel in which past and present will merge with shattering consequences.

London Classic Theatre is one of the most prolific and thriving touring companies on the UK theatre scene. Over the last six years, they have established a reputation for producing challenging, accessible drama of the highest quality. Drama: 8pm.

The Fishes Wishes

Lyngo Theatre Company. “if your tears are salty it’s not a surprise, it’s just the sea coming out of your eyes!” The Fish’s Wishes is full of the ‘theatre-toys’ Lyngo have become famous for - an umbrella with built-in rain, a bowl full of stars, a pot full of bubbles – all made with simplicity and presented with poetry and magic. We mix together up and down, air and water and also science and magic. You can see how the sky gets blue, how water goes up and then rain goes down and how the earth is full of fire.

This is philosophical scientific cabaret for the very young. A little fish lives in a little glass of water. One day the cat decides to have him for breakfast but he breaks the glass and hurts himself. The fish escapes and hides under the blanket in the bedroom. When he comes out he finds a new world full of air, strange creatures like the hoover-fish, and lots of questions to answer.

Performed by Patrick Lynch with clowning, songs and good old-fashioned slapstick, this is a highly interactive show where in the end, between the up and the down, we see a sky at the bottom of the sea, lit up by shining star-fish. The Fish’s Wishes is a new show for young people aged 3+. Childrens’ Theatre: 8pm.

Last Call

Eclipse Productions. It’s 1950’s Dublin, Mountjoy jail and Bartie Maguire is to be hanged in the morning for the callous and brutal murder of his wife and, as expected, he still protests his innocence. It is the job of Patrick McGrath and Dominic Kelly to mind Bartie on his last night on earth and get him to the gallows to let Pierrepoint finish the sentence. Last call is about the interaction of these three men in this highly unusual circumstance. As the play progresses, the lust for life is exposed more as the lies of the past become the truth for the future. One thing is for sure, somebody must die! Drama: 8 pm.
