WALTER VERLING HRHA PAINTINGS
A long and well established Limerick-based painter Verling puts before
Limerick audiences a selection of recent works placed within the context
of works that, over the years, he has preferred to keep to himself,
close at hand – what amounts to his own personal collection
of his work. For many people Verling’s work seems decidedly
in the tradition of Impressionism, Pre-modern in its commitment to
on–the-spot landscape painting; first-hand, direct, small scale
works that celebrate the shapes and colours found in nature still
there for us in the rural, suburban world. Yet his work shows great
emphasis on an intuitive grasp of the importance of pattern and structure
as the design means of raising shape and colour into expressive composition.
In this way, his way, this solo shows demonstrates that Verling’s
work comes well within the realm of Modernism. Belltable Arts Centre
opens
Monday 7th February at 6 p.m. Exhibition 8 February-14th March
CONTEMPORARY COUNTERPARTS 2005
This survey of contemporary practice brings before Limerick audiences
the varied work of Irish born/based artists; many have or have had
close Limerick connections. All of them are a generation or more behind
Verling (or some may say ‘ahead’?). Their work unambiguously
relates to one or more of the central strands of Modernism. They can
be understood to fit within one or another of the niches of Post-modernism;
some may be even said to belong to “Para”-modernism. (Since
the roster of the participating artists has at the printing of this
programme yet to be completed, the names will be held for announcement
at a later date). Belltable Arts Centre

'MamusKa Night' is an informal event giving emphasis on trying out
rather then doing, yet aiming to present quality works that arouse
interest and inspire the audience. Previous MamusKa nights have included
dance, theatre, performance, installations and video pieces. Audience
participation is free and open to the public. MamusKa Night is a bi-monthly
event organised by Daghdha Dance Company. Limerick Boat Club:
Saturday
5th February
French Chanson Meets Russian Gypsy. Caroline Moreau and Oleg Ponomarev
join forces to produce a dazzling evening’s entertainment of
French Chanson and World Gypsy Music. A versatile performer with an
extraordinary voice and a deep understanding of her material –
both musically and lyrically – Moreau has gone from strength
to strength. Not so much fusion as a head-to-head between two of the
most dynamic musical performers in this country, the show promises
an evening of passion, yearning, laughter, tears and – above
all – heart-stopping, foot-stamping, mind-blowing music. Belltable
