The Tailor and Ansty
The
Tailor and Ansty by Eric Cross Adapted by P.J. O’Connor. The
Tailor & Ansty is a historic play set in the townland of Garrynapeaka,
West Cork. Eric Cross, an Englishman, who lived in the area for twenty
years, wrote a book based on two local characters, Timothy Buckley
(the Tailor) and his wife Anastasia (Ansty). The Tailor & Ansty
was published in 1942 and subsequently banned. The play – The
Tailor & Ansty, highlights their characters, earthy humour, sociability
and the national and local reaction to the book. Ronan Wilmot (the
Tailor) plays the role he was “born to act” and Nuala
Hayes who has immersed herself in story telling plays Ansty.

I, Keano
I,
Keano. It never ends, does it? This popular 'musical epic' by Arthur
Matthews and Michael Nugent returns to various stages around the country
this month (check our listings for details). The hit comedy show features
the Apres Match stars Risteard Cooper and Gary Cooke, with Mario Rosenstock
(Gift Grub, Today FM) and Tara Flynn (an original Nuala), Dessie Gallagher
and Malachy McKenna. An ancient Federation sends a legion to an island
to prepare for a momentous war. Their greatest warrior, Keano, has
a passion for perfection exceeded only by his fierce and unpredictable
temper. MaCartacus, their earnest but stubborn General, is aided by
the enthusiastic Quinnus, who builds children's hospitals and gets
PR advice from his wife Surfia. Packie Bonnerus, an expert in using
the net things that gladiators fight with, is also milling about.
The problem starts when Keano arrives, only to find that the battle
round is too hard, the troops are partying, and the Federation - led
by the inebriated junketeer Ridiculus - has forgotten to bring any
daggers and tunics and things. Greek tragedy at its best.
