True West
By Sam Shepard. Performed by the acclaimed Washington DC-Based Keegan
Theatre. This American classic explores alternatives that might spring
from the demented terrain of the California landscape. Sons of a desert-dwelling
alcoholic and a suburban wanderer seeking meaning in Alaska and Picasso
clash over a film script. Austin, the achiever, is a college graduate
and a professional screenwriter. He is staying at Mom¹s near
Los Angeles (instead of home with his own family) to work on a script
he has sold to producer Sal Kimmer. Lee, a demented, desert-dwelling
petty thief, drops in. He pitches his own idea for a movie to Kimmer,
who then wants Austin to junk his bleak, modern-day California love
story and write Lee¹s archetypal-and trashy-western tale. ³Surely
Shepard¹s masterworkSIt tells us a truth, as glimpsed by a 37-year
old genius² N.Y. Post. 8pm, tickets: f15/12.50. Booking on 056

Tom Crean, Antartic Explorer
Written and performed By Aidan Dooley. Aidan Dooley tells the heroic
tale of Tom Crean (1877-1938), the intrepid Irish Antartic explorer
and the only man to serve with Scott and Shackleton on three famous
expeditions: Discovery (1901-1904), Terra Nova (1910-1913 and Endurance
(1914-1916). Tom Crean¹s story, a testament of human fortitude
against the elements of Antarctica, is brought to life in this dramatic
solo performance. Crean¹s 36 mile, solitary trek to base camp,
during the Terra Nova expedition, to rescue his comrades Teddy Evans
and William Lashly has been described by Antarctic historians as
³the finest feat of individual heroism from the entire age of
exploration². He was subsequently awarded the Albert Medal for
his bravery. 8pm, tickets: f15/12.50. Booking on 056 7761674. Watergate
Theatre.
