An Triail
Presented by Aisling Gheár Productions. This is a courtroom
drama set in
small-town Ireland in the early sixties with the audience cast as
judge and
jury. Máiréad Ní Ghráda' s stark and deeply
affecting play deals with the
story of Máire, the sheltered daughter of a devout widow, who
becomes
pregnant by the local married school teacher. With his story of marriage
to
a dying wife who was unable to ever be a Oproper wife' to him, Padhraic
easily seduces Máire, an extremely innocent and romantic young
woman. She fl
ees to Dublin where, against all odds, she
attempts to create an independent life for herself and her daughter,
whilst
awaiting Pádraig. Greatly infl uenced by Bertolt Brecht, Ní
Ghráda' s play is
an uncompromising political statement on an issue which at the time
was so
taboo within her society that it never appeared on any agenda for
discussion: questions could not be asked, there could be no debate.
Production in Irish. 10am & 2pm, tickets: u10. Booking on 056

Breathless
Four Irish women go missing and, subsequently, meet on a deserted
roadside.
In the course of a summer morning they look back on the circumstances
that
led them to this time and place beyond their control. They talk, argue,
laugh and cry and share one shattering secret that has changed their
lives
forever. This new play from award winning novelist, documentary
maker and playwright John MacKenna is a richly observed, darkly comic
and
ultimately poignant story of a housewife, a nurse, a teacher and a
supermarket cashier who have more in common than they first realise.
8pm,
tickets: u12.50/10 (conc.). Booking on 056 7761674. Watergate Theatre.
