Visual Art

May 13th - June 18th, 2006
David Sandlin - Wonderfool World

The Butler Gallery is delighted to present Wonderfool World, the first exhibition in Ireland by the renowned New York artist, David Sandlin.

David Sandlin was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1956. In 1972, at the age of fifteen, he moved with his parents to Hanceville, Alabama. After finishing high school at sixteen, Sandlin moved to Birmingham, Alabama, and received a B.A. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1979. In 1980 he moved to New York City, where he now lives with his wife, Joni, and son, Jake. He currently teaches at the School of Visual Arts.

Sandlin's art first appeared in New York on the streets of the Lower East Side, in the form of hand-screened political posters and prints advertising local art and music events. In 1983 he joined the Gracie Mansion Gallery, a pioneer of the East Village art scene. Sandlin's comics have appeared in RAW, Strappazin, Blab, Nozone, Zero Zero, and other publications. He has also published illustrations in The New Yorker and The New York Times. Sandlin has exhibited his prints, paintings, books, and installations throughout the United States and in Europe, Japan, and Australia.

It is about time that David Sandlin's fantastic visual universe became known to an Irish audience. Sandlin has remained connected to the country of his birth through friends-he sat beside the artist Dermot Seymour in primary school-and through his art, which continues to possess essential references to his origins. Despite, or possibly because of this quirky background, he is a true New York denizen; having lived and worked in that city since 1980.

For over twenty-five years, Sandlin has been making art that encompasses painting, printmaking, books and installations-all equally dynamic and animated. Sandlin has an acerbic wit that reveals itself in how he approaches his questions about the world in which we live. He is an urban storyteller, spinning tales with words and pictures, and his iconography employs a heady mix of narrative imagery and allegory that is distinctly American. Sandlin's wife and son feature prominently in his work, and in recent years themes have also emerged stemming from his father's death and the idea of passing a legacy, a history onto the next generation.

Sandlin's epic figurative paintings require thoughtful reading and reward the viewer greatly. His work combines the carnivalesque with the cartoon, and thus Wonderfool World takes us on a fabulous roller-coaster ride that is provocative, entertaining and immensely worthwhile.

Joan Fitzgerald Cahill - Biography - Pieces of Butterfly Lives

Joan Fitzgerald Cahill is a Waterford born artist now living in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. She studied Fine Art at the Waterford school of Art and The Crawford School of Art, Co. Cork. She has exhibited extensively in the South East region in solo and group shows.

Joan Fitzgerald Cahill's exhibition 'Pieces of Butterfly Lives' opens at County Hall, John Street, Kilkenny on Friday May 5th at 5pm and continues until June 23rd 2006. This exhibition is that of seventeen, acrylic and mixed media on paper pieces varying in size. Her interest in looking at the human figure, by itself or in the landscape, the frailty of it and also its strengths is highlighted in this work.

To put her work into context is to say that she is a painter who's work details the transient nature of human lives. Closer inspection of this exhibition illustrates landscapes with a human presence indicating this transience and our butterfly lives which are short and intense.

Kilkenny Fringe Laughs Festival

More Shows, More Laughs, More of the World's Best Comedians!

KILKENNY, IRE - Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey is pleased to present the 2006 Kilkenny Fringe Laughs Festival. The Fringe Laughs will take place June 2nd through June 4th, to coincide with the hugely popular Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival. The Cat Laughs has blossomed into one of the world's most successful comedy festivals, expanding every year and selling out each and every show on its 2005 bill. Due to this phenomenal demand, the Fringe Laughs was established to provide more shows and more laughs with more of the world's best comedians!

The Fringe Laughs will feature comedians Tony V, whose television credits include appearances on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Seinfeld and Rescue Me; Irishman Michael Mee, who has appeared on RTE's Late Late Show and Liffey Laughs; Brian Joyce, one of the brightest up-and-coming talents on the Irish comedy circuit; and Jim McCue, an international crowd favorite who has performed in such far away places as Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Caribbean. There will also be special guest appearances from some of Ireland's top comedians, such as Cat Laughs veteran James Goldsbury.

"We're very pleased to be part of this great weekend," says Alan Sheehan of Kilbeggan Whiskey. "The demand is there for more and more shows each and every year in Kilkenny. We're proud to offer what we think is a great show with some of the most talented comedians in the business. It will be a great addition to what is already a fantastic festival."

The Kilkenny Fringe Laughs will take place at Morrissey's Bar, 20 Rose Inn Street, Kilkenny. Shows are scheduled for Friday June 2nd, 9PM; Saturday June 3rd, 9PM; and Sunday June 4th, 9PM. Admission is €15. For booking information, directions and more, please visit www.kilkennyfringelaughs.com or ring Morrissey's at +353 (0)56 778 6818.

About the comedians...

Tony V - A founding member of Boston's legendary Ding Ho Comedy Club (the same club that produced Steven Wright, Paula Poundstone, and Denis Leary to name a few), Tony's national television credits include appearances on "Seinfeld", "Late Night with Conan O'Brien", "Rescue Me", "Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn", "Shorties Watchin' Shorties", and "Boston Common." Tony has appeared on the big screen in such cult comedy classics as Shakes the Clown and One Crazy Summer, and he recently finished shooting a pilot with Showtime called The Brotherhood. Tony was featured in the award-winning documentary When Stand Up Stood Out, and he has been seen on the HBO, A&E, MTV, and Comedy Central networks. He was a featured act at the 2004 Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal, and performs regularly at clubs throughout the United States.

Michael Mee - A native of Cork and a former lawyer and lecturer, Michael Mee has been described as "Woody Allen with a Cork brogue" (Time Out New York). A regular headliner at comedy clubs throughout Ireland and the UK, Michael has performed two solo Edinburgh shows to rave reviews - 2002's Mee, Myself and I and 2005's Confessions of a Swot. Michael boasts an impressive array of television credits, including RTE's "Late Late Show", "Don't Feed the Gondolas", and the "Liffey Laughs"; the BBC's "Stand-Up Show" and "The Empire Laughs Back"; and Paramount Comedy's "The World Stands Up." He has performed at the New York Irish Comedy Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and the Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival, and he's had a number of short stories published in Ireland, the UK, and the USA. An excellent comedian and writer, the Sunday Times has called Michael "the brightest Irish comedy talent of recent times"!

Jim McCue - At six foot six, Jim McCue literally stands head and shoulders above the sea of "stick to the script" comedians. Jim blends thought provoking material and uncanny improv skills with a style that actually encourages audience participation. His wise cracks and self-deprecating humour have made him a huge hit with crowds in the United States, Canada and Ireland. His stand up has been featured on Comedy Central, and he has entertained U.S. troops in such far-away places as Iraq, Afghanistan, and Bosnia. Simply put, Jim McCue has proven himself to be a crowd favorite wherever he goes! Jim is also the founder of the Boston International Comedy and Film Festival, which is entering its 7th year and has fast become one of the most popular and successful festivals of its kind in the United States. www.jimmccue.com www.bostoncomedyfestival.com

Brian Joyce - Universal humor and a sharp set that combines politics, culture, and everyday life have made Brian Joyce a popular up-and-coming act on both sides of the Atlantic! A relative newcomer to comedy, this Boston native was a regular performer at the Comedy Studio in Cambridge, Massachusetts (the "greatest comedy club on Earth" according to Frank Smyley, senior producer of Late Night with Conan O'Brien) before moving to Dublin. Since then Brian has impressed Irish audiences with his sharp looks, witty humor, and deadpan delivery. He has performed all over Ireland, was a featured performer at the 2006 Galway Comedy Festival, and is resident MC of his own weekly comedy show in Dublin, Comedy at the Westmoreland. Stateside, he was selected to perform in the 2005 Boston International Comedy Festival, and his stand up has been heard on XM Radio, America's #1 satellite radio network with an audience of over 4 million listeners. www.brianjoyce.net
