Free From The Itch Of Desire
With Susan Collis, Eline McGeorge, Ann Course, Vanessa O¹Reilly. The Platonic phrase Free from the Itch of Desire refers to art that does not overtly offer blatant emotional content. This mantra was often used by the formalist¹s tradition in modern art to describe what they believed to be the true art form. This tradition reacted against art that they claim was overstated in its expression. Each artist in the exhibition will explore desire through the medium of drawing, often considered understated in its expression. It also demonstrates the devices used to expand the traditional notion of drawing. Drawing can be 3 dimensionalised, animated, technolgised or created directly onto the wall.Butler Gallery, Kilkenny Castle. www.butlergallery.com

THEATRE & OPERA

June 1 & 2
...touched...
By Ursula Rani Sarma. Buried alive in their sad, sozzled uncle¹s rural pub in the ³crotch of the country², Cora and Mickey still barely more than children are determined to escape. Particularly as Cora has a secret, one she has been harbouring ever since the day of her tenth birthday, when the local doctor took her to the beach for raspberry-ripple ice cream. The first professional production of Ursula Rani Sarma¹s play is fast, furious, meltingly lyrical and full of physical poetry as it deftly transports us from city to country and back again, and from harsh memories to even harsher realities in Dublin on New Year¹s Eve 1999. Asylum Productions. 8pm, tickets: f12.50/10. Booking on 056 7761674. Watergate Theatre.

June 18 to 20
The Enchanted
Theatre Tree
³Once upon a time, in a land far, far away called Jesterland, there was a tree. Not just any tree, but a theatre tree, cared for by the Jesterland Fairies. In its branches lay all sorts of stories and songs and dances, just waiting to be told, sung and danced.² 7.30pm (matinee on Sunday at 3pm), tickets: f10. Booking on 056 7761674. Watergate Theatre.

June 24 to 26
A Midsummer
Night¹s Dream
With Barrabas Theatre Company. Shakespeare at his funniest and Barrabas at their boldest! More than a love story - it is the story of unrequited love, mistaken identity, of magic and tomfoolery and passion unleashed. 8pm, tickets: f20/16, Group rate f12.50. Booking on 056 7761674. Watergate Theatre.
