Free From The Itch
Of Desire
With Susan Collis, Eline McGeorge, Ann Course, Vanessa O’Reilly.
The Platonic phrase Free from the Itch of Desire refers to art that
does not overtly offer blatant emotional content. This mantra was
often used by the formalist’s tradition in modern art to describe
what they believed to be the true art form. This tradition reacted
against art that they claim was overstated in its expression. Each
artist in the exhibition will explore desire through the medium of
drawing, often considered understated in its expression. It also demonstrates
the devices used to expand the traditional notion of drawing. Drawing
can be 3 dimensionalised, animated, technolgised or created directly
onto the wall.Butler Gallery, Kilkenny Castle.

THEATRE & OPERA
July 20 to 24
The Playboy of the Western World
During its premiere in 1907 when Christy Mahon, the protagonist of
J.M. Synge’s The Playboy Of The Western World, arrives in a
small village on the coast of Mayo and seduces its inhabitant with
his “gallous” tale of killing his father, The Playboy
Of The Western World provoked a riot among its opening night audience.
In the intervening decades, Synge has become a major figure in European
theatre and his classic play’s interrogation of identity, gender,
and nationality continues to be provocative and urgent.
Throughout the course of its first one hundred years the Abbey Theatre
has performed The Playboy of the Western World both at home and abroad,
particularly in America. It has been a play that has received immense
national as well as international attention and is one of the Abbey’s
signature plays deeply rooted in the theatre’s legacy. It is
particularly appropriate that during its centenary year the Abbey
is embarking on both a national and an American tour of this signature
play. 8pm, tickets: f20/16 conc. Booking on 056 7761674. Watergate
Theatre.
