Genre - Paintings by Nick Miller Also Artist Talk
Artists Talk: Wednesday November 17th, 1pm. Booking Advisable.
Consisting of Portraiture, constructed Still Life, Landscape and the Figure. Opening Hours 10.30-12.45, 2-5.

Portraiture, constructed Still Life, Landscape and the Figure - while the genres Nick Miller paints are at the heart of the tradition, his work is both contemporary and timeless.

Over the last two decades, Nick Miller has refined the focus of his interest, moving with dexterity and conviction within the different genres. Yet all are connected by a common approach to working only directly in the presence of his subject, as the artist searches for essential likeness usually reserved for portraiture alone.

As a Londoner raised in an urban setting antithetical to the rural setting of Co Sligo where he now lives, Miller is also provoked to paint by the need to locate himself in relation to the people, the landscape and the objects that he encounters on a daily basis.

Fortunately, his fundamental concern with presence and eloquent ability to communicate his fascination with the microcosm in which he finds himself, allows these 'genre' paintings to transcend their immediate context and present compelling images of universal relevance.

In this exhibition of new work in the vaulted spaces of the Butler Gallery, the artist displays the depth and breadth of his practice and convincingly confirms his place among our most significant contemporary painters.

Nick Miller was born in 1962 in London. He moved to Ireland in 1984 and has lived in Co Sligo since 1992. He was elected to Aosdána in 2001. A critically acclaimed major review of his work "Figure to Ground 1993-2003" was held at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin 2003 including works from a long term landscape project working from a mobile studio -a converted truck.
VENUE: Butler Gallery, The Castle, Kilkenny, Ireland.

de fil en aguille - snáth nasc - from thread to needle
French Knitting at no. 72 John Street, November 2004

A mixed-media exhibition, inspired by the Formal Gardens at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, and created entirely from knitting and stitching goes on show at number 72 John Street, Kilkenny on November 5th 2004. snáth nasc… 'de fil en aiguille… thread to needle… is the creation of French-born artist Françoise Dupré, who worked with individuals and groups from Kilkenny and Dublin while she was resident as part of IMMA’s Artists’ Work Programme

For three months Françoise met regularly with a group of women from Dublin and a group of women at the Loughboy Area Resource Centre in Kilkenny. Their work culminated in a floor-based piece of art work using French knitting, Irish stitches, four needle knitting and a wide range of white yarns.

The particular techniques of French knitting also called spool knitting or knitting Nancy consists of making knitted tubes using a spool with four or more pins. The Irish knitting stitches used include cable, blackberry and moss stitches which are part of the Irish Aran sweater.

The installation at number 72 celebrates the work created collaboratively by artist and participants and takes traditional knitting skills into a contemporary art context. It also includes a series of video stills that give viewers a sense of time and place, and provides a record of the meetings processes and dialogues that underpin the project.

French-born and UK-based, Françoise Dupré makes objects, site-specific and context-based installations and temporary events. She uses the French knitting technique because of its association with childhood and home crafts. Through her work, the artist aims to celebrate creative skills that are invisible, changing or being lost through cultural and social shifts and migration.

'de fil en aiguille…' is part of 'Here and There', a series of artist-led cross-cultural projects initated and developed by Françoise Dupré. website: www.here-and-there.net.

'de fil en aiguille…' is funded by IMMA, the University of England, Birmingham, and Kilkenny County Council.

'de fil en aigulille…' is sponsored by Pony, Springwools and Repro 35.

Those participating in the project were Claire Bracken, Frieda Czerniak, Theresa Czerniak, Ria Czerniak, Maria Dollard, Tim Elford, June Elliott, Jane Flynn, Beverly Green, Breda Humphries, Sylvia Hoefnagels, Ruth Morris-Grant, Alice Murphy, Susan Murphy, Máire Ní Neachtain, Maureen O’ Brien, Vera O’ Heíearnáin, Hupert Pitter, Silvia Serban, Trish Walsh, Anne Marie Weafer and Orlagh Weafer.
