Bealtaine 2008 in Cork - Celebrating Creativity in Older Age
'Now Strike Your Note'. The Bealtaine 2008 theme is taken from Seamus Heaney's poem 'Station Island': 'You've listened long enough. Now strike your note.'1
It's proving an inspiration for arts events all over Ireland celebrating the diverse voices and rich experiences of older people. This year Bealtaine explores the many ways there are to grow older and delights in the fact that you?re never too old to try something new!
Highlights in Cork will include outreach fine art printmaking workshops for the beginner to explore monoprint, screenprint & collograph printmaking, with Cork Printmakers, Wandesford Quay, Crosses Green. For further information on these free events, please phone 021 432 2422
Cork City Libraries on Grand Parade Cork will be offering a programme of readings, talks, workshops & demonstrations on arts & crafts; tours of literary interest; Irish-language activities; music recitals and exhibitions. For further details contact Eamonn Kirwan or branch librarians on 021 492 4900
Newcestown Friendship Group, Cladagh House, Mossgrove, Newcestown have produced Béaloideas Bhaille Noís, a hand-printed, hand-illustrated book of Newcestown?s folklore, and for something a bit different Luscious Legs, a calendar of photographs of members' legs! For more information contact Betty M Smith on 021 733 8177
And St Patrick's Community Hospital, Tallow Road, Fermoy are working around theme of ?Strike your Note, Say your Quote: Let your voice be heard?,with music, workshops & other activities. For futher details contact Ann O'Connor or Deirdre Fox 025 31 300.
About Bealtaine
Coordinated by Age & Opportunity, Bealtaine is the national arts festival celebrating creativity in older age. The festival encourages greater participation in the arts by older people as artists and performers, as event organisers and audience, everywhere from national institutions to local parish halls. The ethos is one of fun, empowerment and exploration.
Now in its 13th year, Bealtaine is an agenda-setting cultural first, an Irish innovation. In May 2007 there were 1300 events countrywide, organised by 337 partner organisations, attracting an audience of 50,000 people, making this one of Ireland's biggest arts festivals. And while there?s currently nothing like Bealtaine anywhere else in the world, other countries are following our lead and creating festivals based on our model of celebration and participation.
