Whipping The Herring: Survival & Celebration in Nineteenth Century
Irish Art
Whipping the Herring examines everyday life in nineteenth century
Ireland, with particular focus on the depiction of the less well-off,
for whom life was often a struggle for survival. The exhibition will
include depictions of fairs and funerals, weddings and wakes,
pilgrimages and penances. Artists of the period frequently set out to
depict stereotypical images, the sort of standardised sentimental
imagery found throughout nineteenth century Europe. However a number
of regional artists, such as Nathaniel Grogan, James Brenan and
Daniel McDonald, were more original in their work, transcending
stereotypes and providing a vivid eyewitness account of Irish life,
in both city and country. American and English artists also visited
Ireland and their paintings illuminate many aspects of Irish rural
traditions and material culture Crawford Art Gallery, Emmet Place.

Performed by George Seremba. Come Good Rain is a moving and
inspirational autobiographical account of writer and actor George
Seremba, as he takes the audience on his journey from survival to
triumph over the oppressive political regimes of Uganda in the 70s.
Integrating African song and folklore as well as live percussion,
Seremba depicts the vibrancy and wonder of youth, his deep love for
Africa, and how as a student and political activist, he suffered
torture and near death. With poetic sincerity, Seremba captures the
hearts of audiences who experience the thoughts and words of a man
embracing life, in the face of near death. Tickets: f25. Box Office:

Mum’s The Word
The smash hit comedy about how children ruin change your life
forever. Written by a group of six women who had once been exciting,

amateur mothers with ten children under six between them, Mum’s The
Word hangs the dirty nappy laundry of maternity out to dry and brings
both the laughter and tears of motherhood to the stage. A hilarious,
intimate look at motherhood. Six mums tell stories you have not heard
before – stories too embarrassing, too personal to tell even their
closest friends. “Sometimes when I am desperate for more sleep I lie
to my husband about how many times I got up in the night with the
baby”. After record-breaking UK, Australian and Canadian tours and a
West End run, this award-winning, sell-out theatrical phenomenon is
