of the near future. Julian Neary, an impersonator whose act has gone
tired overseas returns home a ghost of a man. In search of a mystic,
spiritual island of solace and healing, Neary finds, instead, a
barren, urban landscape of abandoned houses, shopping centres and
apartment blocks. ‘The Tiger Crash’ they called it. He
goes on a
binge for five years and ends up in a shoddily run institution having
to tell his story to a group of manic patients. 9pm (6.30pm on Sunday

The Art of Swimming
part of cork midsummer festival
By Lynda Radley. Playgroup returns with an intimate and compelling
solo performance about long distance swimming, celebrity, memory and
time. Mercedes Gleitze was a sportswoman who swam extensively,
breaking and setting records, often far in advance of the men in her
field. Lynda Radley found her in a photograph in Cork City Library
and has been fascinated and frustrated in equal measure ever since.

Held
part of cork midsummer festival
By Adrian Howells. A one-on-one performance that takes place across
3
domestic spaces - first in a kitchen where he offers a hand as well
as tea, then the lounge where he puts his arm around you as you watch
TV or listen to music and finally the bedroom where you lie together
for 30 minutes. Evoking both the fleeting comfort of one-night stands
and the sometimes stifling atmosphere of long-term relationships,
Held encourages us to think about how much the simple act of touching
can say. Tickets: f15. Booking through Cork Midsummer Festival Box
Office 021 4274077. A residential house in Shandon.
June 19 to 30
The Cleansing of Constance Brown
part of cork midsummer festival
A piece of visual theatre from the company that created the Cork
Midsummer Festival hit of 2006, Of All The People In All The World,
in which 6 tonnes of rice were used to bring world statistics to
life. Constance Brown has lived in many different countries in many
different ages, as a ruler and as a servant, a legend and a code
word. Her cleansing has been a religious, psychic or medical
imperative; it has been a domestic chore, a personal ablution, a
fragment of a genocide. In just sixty minutes you will be taken
around the world and back in time as a witness to her story. This
installation performance is set in a specially constructed corridor
and plays to an audience of just twenty people at a time. Expect a
beautiful, charged, episodic show full of ghosts, where the walls
aren’t stable and the floor appears to shift beneath your feet.
6.30pm & 9pm (no show on Sunday). Tickets: f20/15. Box Office:
021
4904275. Granary Theatre, Mardyke.

for
which he is best known. It was instantly successful making Franz
Lehár internationally famous. This will be a Young Artists’
presentation featuring some of Cork’s upcoming local artists.

high above the heads of the audience. Created by the fantastic Fidget
Feet, its story of a fisherman and a mermaid, who meet in the middle
of the ocean. The fisherman comes rowing his boat across the night
sky when he meets the beautiful mermaid. But is she his friend? Or

Woyzeck
part of cork midsummer festival
Corcadorca this year turns its attention to another great classic,
Woyzeck by Georg Buchner. Woyzeck is a powerful and intense drama
about a sailor struggling to hold on to his humanity and sanity as
his life spirals out of control. Corcadorca has typically chosen a
very unique yet fitting location to stage this show – the Naval
Base
on Haulbowline Island. Starting at the water’s edge as darkness
falls, Woyzeck will be a promenade production moving around various
historic and impressive buildings on the base. 10pm. No shows on 25th
& 26th. Tickets: f20/15. Naval Base on Haulbowline.

booming in
Celtic Tiger Cork, and Declan’s got his bags packed for the
holiday
of a lifetime. 24 years old, in a foreign land, with a wad of notes
in his pocket, Declan and the lads embark on a bizarre journey of
self-discovery and cheap thrills. It’s Ireland on tour. It’s

army reborn, but this time the match ticket is only 5 euro (or two
for a tenner). 8.30pm. Tickets: f12/10. Quad Bar, Tuckey Street.

Bath of Baghdad
part of cork midsummer festival
Written & directed by Jawad Al-Assadi. Performed by Fayez Kazak
&
Nidal Sejari. War torn Baghdad. Present day. Two brothers, both of
them long distance truck drivers, meet at the public baths as has
been their ritual for years. Both are victims of the thirty years
of
Saddam Hussein’s brutal dictatorship. And now both live under
the
terror and anarchy of the post Saddam era. One brother is a
collaborator with the American forces, the other refuses to be. But,
despite their different allegiances, neither can escape Iraq’s
bloody
present… Performed in Arabic with English surtitles. 8pm. Tickets:

stunning physical dance theatre. Inspired by Brian Keenan’s
unsettling biography of his incarceration in Beirut, the pair are
trapped in a space the size of a small lift. They try to co-exist
as
best they can in their new home, literally climbing the walls, the
roof and each other with an intense claustrophobic clarity. Comic,
tragic, graceful and absurd by turns, Fabrik Potsdam brings their
multi-award winning dance piece to Cork audiences. 8pm. Tickets:
