Helnwein, (born in Vienna in 1948), is a formidable artist and his work has often been proved controversial, because they function as moral probes. Deeply moving and informative. 8pm, tickets: f8. Tickets & Info: 4509274. Tigh Filí Arts Centre, Thompson House, MacCurtain Street.

July 12 to 17
The Playboy Of The Western World
During its premiere in 1907 when Christy Mahon, the protagonist of J.M. Synge¹s The Playboy Of The Western World, arrives in a small village on the coast of Mayo and seduces its inhabitant with his ³gallous² tale of killing his father, The Playboy Of The Western World provoked a riot among its opening night audience. In the intervening decades, Synge has become a major figure in European theatre and his classic play¹s interrogation of identity, gender, and nationality continues to be provocative and urgent.
Throughout the course of its first one hundred years the Abbey Theatre has performed The Playboy of the Western World both at home and abroad, particularly in America. It has been a play that has received immense national as well as international attention and is one of the Abbey¹s signature plays deeply rooted in the theatre¹s legacy. It is particularly appropriate that during its centenary year the Abbey is embarking on both a national and an American tour of this signature play. 8pm, tickets: f15/20/25/30 (+ f2 booking fee). Box Office: 4270022. Cork Opera House.

When a revolutionary mathematical theory is discovered amongst the deceased¹s papers, questions arise as to whether Catherine has inherited her father¹s difficult balance between genius and madness. Is the mathematical theory Catherine¹s own work of genius or is she simply deluded and as susceptible to mental instability as her father was? 8pm, tickets: f15/12. Box Office: 4501673.
