Spirit of Place
These new works by Frances Murphy are inspired by the Speaker’s
Corner in London where people gather to Communicate through language
to voice their diverse views. “As resident curator I am aware
dual function of Tigh filí; as both as a gallery space and
a poets house, therefore an awareness of possibilities of representation
inform my work. The work seeks to represent these twin worlds of open
expression through words and visualisation. The plaster heads and
mixed media explore associations and interrelationships between these
two different art forms”. Gallery 9, Tigh Filí Gallery,
Thompson House, MacCurtain St.

Of Light and Half-Light
John Hall and David Lester have been involved in photography for over
twenty years. In the past they have been involved in group exhibitions
and now feel that the time has come to raise the stakes and jointly
present their exhibition “Of Light and Half-Light”. Of
particular interest is the diversity of styles within each photographic
genre resulting in stunning colour landscapes and evocative black
and white images. John has captured the rugged Irish landscape in
vivid colour, using
predominantly wide-angle perspectives and combining extremely long
exposures at dusk (sometimes up to thirty minutes) with “light-
painting” techniques to achieve his unique style. David has
used the black and white medium to portray a subtle
interplay of light and shadow on flesh and wood producing a series
of thought-provoking still life and figure studies along with images
of individual trees. The quality and subtlety of lightIng combined
with well-honed compositional skills paramount in taking photography
beyond the “snapshot” into the realm of art. Cork Vision
Centre, North Main Street.

James Barry
James Barry (1741-1806) is perhaps the most significant artist to
have been born and trained in Cork. Much of his works reflect the
history and politics of his own times, as well as the classical art
of Greece and Rome. The strong moral and social content in his paintings
show him to be an early Neo-Classicist, yet his life was thwarted
by a strong romantic temperament, an argumentative nature and financial
misfortune. The James Barry Exhibition will present an unequalled
opportunity to re-examine Barry's contribution to both the history
of art and the history of his own times, with works on loan from key
collections in Ireland, Europe and North America, as well as presenting
recently rediscovered paintings. The exhibition will
conclude with an international academic conference which will coincide
with the bicentenary of Barry’s death. Crawford Art
Gallery, Emmet Place.

To Stay or Leave
By Daithi Kearney. To Stay or Leave is a stage musical set in Ireland
of the 1920’s and 1930’s that looks at issues such as
emigration and unemployment in rural Irish society. It is a new nation
in the aftermath of Independence and the Civil War where the clergy
exerted a strong influence over both society and the political system.
It is also an Ireland of superstitions and piseog’s that clung
to older traditions such as Irish Traditional music, song and dance.
In a rapidly changing Irish society, the primary question was often
to stay or leave. Presented by UCC Irish Traditional Music Society.

Under Milk Wood
By Dylan Thomas. With Jon Kenny and Myles Breen. Under Milk Wood tells

powerful forces operate beneath the calm exterior of a town which
has “fallen head over bells in love” Each relationship
is governed by peculiar rules of love and many of them are frustrated
by their sometimes explicit desires. Under Milk Wood, hailed by many
as Thomas’ masterpiece, has become well known as a BBC Recording

BABES IN THE WOOD. Robin to the Rescue!!
It’s
that time again, oh yes it is! Cork Opera House is delighted to announce
the much loved and hugely popular Christmas Pantomime, Babes in the
Wood, sponsored by Bride View Developments and Calyx.
We
invite you to come with us on a magical journey to the fairytale Kingdom
of Rottingham. Two orphaned babes are abandoned and left at the mercy
of their Uncle, the Evil Sheriff Spindleshanks. Their saviours in
Sherbert Forest are Robin Hood and his hilarious Merry Men who steal
from the rich to give to the poor. Sing and dance with the beautiful
Maid Marian, hiss at the Henchman Ron Seal and laugh (and cry) with
the wonderful Dame Knotty Knickers, not forgetting special guests
King Kong, Willy Wonka, Super Nanny and many more!
Director
Bryan Flynn has for the fourth year assembled a brilliant cast and
creative team. Dave O’Connor returns as Musical Director with
choreography by Avril Murphy. The amazing set designed by Lisa O’Mullane
will wow audiences as will the stunning costumes. Part of the logistical
challenge for the team this year is the huge number of young people
(over 100) involved in every performance. These children are from
three dance schools (Donna’s Dance Studio, Joan Denise Moriarty
School of Dance and the Cork Arts Studio) and over twenty primary
schools who will perform “Is this the way to Sherbet Forest
