The
Pied Piper (Panto)
The
RATS invade Leeside!
It’s
that time again, oh yes it is! Cork Opera House is delighted to announce
the much loved and hugely popular Christmas Pantomime, The Pied Piper,
sponsored by Anglo Irish Bank and HB Ice Cream. With the return of
last year’s widely acclaimed creative team, and a wonderfully
witty script by Bull Island’s Alan Shortt, the Pied Piper, King
Rat and all their crazy friends will be sure to have kids, mums, dads
AND grannies in stitches!
Bryan
Flynn again directs the talented cast and creative team, along with
Dave O’Connor as Musical Director and choreography by Belinda
Murphy. We are delighted to involve four Dance schools: Donna Daly
Dance Studio, Joan Denise Moriarty’s School of Dance, Cork Arts
Studio and Marisa Fragolini’s Dance School, totaling over 120
children on stage over a period of 45 shows. Twenty four Primary Schools
are also participating, the vast majority of whom have never been
on stage before.
The Rats, lead by the evil King Rat (Cormac
Costello) are taking over Leeside, eating everything in sight and
frightening the citizens! Nobody, including Lord Mayor (Tony Calnan)
or the greedy Lady Mayoress (Gerry McLoughlin), knows what to do.
The villagers are at their wits end. That is until the Pied Piper
(Mark O’Shaughnessy) shows up and in return for getting rid
of the pests, he is promised a fee of €10,000. What happens when
Lady Mayoress strikes a deal with King Rat and the fee is not paid?
Will the Villagers ever see their children again? Join Silly Billy
(Declan Wolfe), Davina (Laura Mitchell) and the hysterical Dame Dolly
Mixture (Frank Mackey) on their adventures to solve the mystery and
rescue the children!
The amazing costumes and stunning set are,
for the first time, both designed and made in Cork, (costumes by Margaret
O’Flynn and Jessica Healy and set by Joe Stockdale). The hilarious
scenes, including Leeside’s very own Pest-Factor, What Not to
Wear, and I’m a Celeb-rat-y, and special guest appearances by
Catwomen, Spiderman, Cinderella, Posh & Becks, Wayne Rooney, and
the Cork Hurlers make this show RATASTIC!
Traditional Panto at its best – oh yes
it is!!!

Under Milk Wood
Dylan Thomas's - Under Milk Wood
UNDER MILK WOOD, Dylan Thomas’s last
work and only play, opens at The Granary Theatre on Thursday January
13th. The production is in aid of Marymount Hospice and is being produced
by coco coco. The Cork Co-Operative and Cork Collective, Combined
for Charity. coco coco draws its members from ‘resting’
Cork based performers and practitioners.
Heading up the creative team is stage director Marion Wyatt, whose
most recent work Singin' In The Rain was an enormous success both
here and in Dublin. The cast, in multiple roles, includes ten of Cork’s
finest actors: Deirdre O’ Riordan, Ann Dorgan, Rosie O’
Regan, Shevaun Hogan, Joy Buckle, Barry O’Reilly, Ian McGuirk,
David O’Brien, Charlie Ruxton, Kieran Mc Carthy and Shane Casey.
UNDER MILK WOOD was commissioned by the BBC who in 1963 recorded it
as “play for voices” with narration by another famous
Welshman, Richard Burton, who claimed “the entire thing is about
religion, the idea of death and sex.” These themes are central
to the lives of the colourful characters described with great fondness
by the author. The multitude of anecdotes interwoven in a masterful
fashion and written in a lyrical, evocative language creates an enduring
portrayal of the place and the people.
Thomas introduces the colourful townsfolk of a seaside village through
their dreams as he examines powerful forces that operate beneath the
calm exterior of a town which has “fallen head over bells in
love.”
Hailed by some as Dylan Thomas' finest work, UNDER MILK WOOD is in
turn funny, touching and delightful, reflecting the places he grew
up in and knew in Wales - particularly Laugharne, New Quay and Swansea.
Providing an inspired and irreverent account of life and love in a
small coastal town on one spring day in Wales - with unforgettable
characters like Captain Cat, Myfanwy Price, Organ Morgan, Willy Nilly
the Postman, Polly Garter and Dai Bread populating this odd place.
Come and eavesdrop on a day in the life of a magical, seaside village,
rich in nothing but characters. Let yourself be swept away by the
passion and poetry of Thomas's genius and his mischievous, bawdy humour.
Come not only in awe of an inspired poet (though you won't be disappointed
on that score), but also in the expectation of a good belly-laugh
as a result of Thomas seeing humanity whole and imperfect - and loving
it all.

Shakespeare’s
Villains
Once again Steven Berkoff holds the stage alone
- this time with his exploration and analysis of Shakespeare’s
most villainous characters. Iago, the Macbeths, Shylock, Richard III…characters
who are inherently evil, others whose situation leads them to evil
deeds, others at the mercy of an evil society. Incisive insights into
the psyche give way to Shakespeare’s own words which explode
into the auditorium from one of the UK's most formidable and maverick
talents.

La Dona Manca o Barbi-Superestar - (The Maimed
Woman)
Energetic, athletic, brilliant and committed,
La Dona Manca o Barbi- Superestar (The Maimed Woman) is a radical
exploration of feminine stereotypes and mythology that was a major
critical hit when it opened at the Teatro Nacional de Catalunya (TNC)
in Barcelona. Choreographed by Sol Picó, one of Europe¹s
leading choreographers, this often blackly comic production combines
music, technology and theatricality to provoke its audiences. Sol
Picó¹s work is unique, and offers an unforgettable anthology
of movement, illumination and music, all captured within a framework
of deep thought, pathos and heavenly Catalan style. These performances
will present Cork with nights of unstoppable energy. Workshops and
masterclasses for professional dancers will take place prior to the
performances.

New
Paintings by Billy Foley
Foley’s
gestural drawings and paintings are a dynamic exploration of line
and form. His formal painterly concerns have a certain amount in common
with the preoccupations of Abstract Expressionism, but he has found
a particular resonance for his interests in the language of science
- matter, anti matter, space, gravity and the movement of forms pushing
and pulling apart. This is experienced against a white background
or void, creating an arena of active tension and movement.

Both fall under the remit of the European Union (EU). The old programme
officially ends in 2004 with Cork City becoming the first European

As well as recognising a city’s existing cultural

and HB Ice Cream. With the return of last year’s widely acclaimed
creative team, and a wonderfully witty script by Bull Island’s
Alan Shortt, the Pied Piper, King Rat and all their crazy friends
will be sure to have kids, mums, dads AND grannies in stitches!
Bryan Flynn again directs the talented cast
and creative team, along with Dave O’Connor as Musical Director
and choreography by Belinda Murphy. We are delighted to involve four
Dance schools: Donna Daly Dance Studio, Joan Denise Moriarty’s
School of Dance, Cork Arts Studio and Marisa Fragolini’s Dance
School, totaling over 120 children on stage over a period of 45 shows.
Twenty four Primary Schools are also participating, the vast majority
of whom have never been on stage before.
Traditional Panto at its best – oh yes
it is!!!

Opera 2005 launches the pilot scheme of its Opera in the Classroom
Project
Opera
2005 brings an introduction to opera to five primary schools in Cork
City and County in the pilot scheme of its Opera in the Classroom
Project.
Each
school involved will receive three visits from professional musicians
over an eight week period. During the first visit, three opera singers
and a pianist will take the students through the different voice types,
different styles and structures particular to opera, and will attempt
to give them a feeling for the musical, dramatic and visual languages
that combine to make up opera. The second and third visits will explore
the children’s own creative response to opera by composing music,
writing their own stories and designing sets.
Because
most people only experience opera as a finished, grand spectacle,
there is not a widespread understanding of the many creative processes
that are enlisted in its making and how these processes are similar,
in many respects, to other more widely understood forms of music and
drama. In essence, Opera 2005 hopes to make a series of strong connections
between general experience, basic musical impulses and the extraordinary
heights to which these can be raised in opera; giving children a sense
of how ordinary, and extraordinary the operatic medium is.
The
five schools that have been selected for this initial project are:
South Presentation Primary School, Douglas St, Cork
Bandon Presentation Primary School, Cork
Gurraneasig Primary School, Garretstown, Cork
Scoil Mhuire, Wellington Road, Cork
Christians Junior School, Wellington Road, Cork
