Hosting its annual summer exhibition, opening Thursday 22nd May, Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa celebrates 20 years of art and design at Tramore Rd. Featuring the work from 130 of the 2008 graduates the show entitled 'Up The Walls' will cover a diverse range of media reflective of the broad spectrum of subjects on offer at the college. You can expect to see the very best of student work at post leaving cert level in painting, drawing, print making, design, combined materials, ceramics, photography, textiles, furniture design, multi media and graphic design.

This year will also see the debut of the new Higher Professional Arts Diploma affiliated with the Cork Enterprise Board designed to prepare students to engage with their own professional practice. The Arts Administration course also get to put their learning into practise as the team design, plan and organise the exhibition headed by project managers from the class Anna Crudge and Sinéad Foley. Their course director and exhibitions manager Carol White enthuses, "The exhibition will appeal to everybody in Cork - adults, secondary school students (who may want to study art and design), children - as we will be having tours and workshops, music and family events for the duration of the exhibition, free to the public." Such events will run weekdays from Fri 23rd to 29th of May.

Art and Design Department Head Rachel Abraham recommends a viewing of the show for those considering applying to the college, "The work is indicative of the high standard of Art & Design tuition at CSN." She also reminds that early interviews for Autum '08 will take place on Monday 26th May. For further information on interviews and application details contact the main office at 021 4961020.

Art at the Cork Opera House

Today the Cork Opera House launched their collection of 37 pieces of art featuring some of Cork’s eminent and emerging artists. The Chairman of the Cork Opera House, Dr Charlie Hennessy introduced Professor Colm O Briain, Director of the National College of Art and Design who opened the collection at the Cork Opera House. The Cork Opera House started collecting the works in 2000 after the refurbishment of the front of the Opera House. The objective was to collect and exhibit the work of artists working in Cork including young art students, who were given a start in their career with both a financial boost and the much needed exposure in exhibiting their work at the Cork Opera House. The majority of art was purchased through the 1 % art scheme with some on loan from artist and owners and others donated from artist and Corkonians. Opening the collection Professor Colm O Briain spoke of the importance of public art and art in a non gallery context. He added “it is now very important for works of art to be seen in other environments such as offices, schools, hotels, hospitals and theatres” The collection features some of Ireland’s well established artists such as William Crozier, Tom Walsh, Bridget Flannery, Maurice Desmond, Charles Tyrell, Charlo Quain, Maria Simonds-Gooding and emerging artists such as Tom Clement, Martin Finnan, Shane Johnson, Tonia Kehoe and Eamonn O’ Ceallachain. The Chairman of the Cork Opera House concluded the event by saying “we felt the most appropriate time to launch this collection was during 150th anniversary of the Cork Opera House and in the week that Opera House was unofficially opened in a benefit concert for the Cork Blind Asylum on the 29th January 1855”. Dr Hennessey added “in the year Cork is the designated European Capital of Culture we are delighted to display these works of art to over two hundred thousand people who visit the Opera House yearly. The 37 works of art are on display throughout the Cork Opera House stairwells and reception areas for the general public to enjoy. A brochure on the collection is available at the reception of the Cork Opera House.
