James Barry
James Barry (1741-1806) is perhaps the most significant artist to have been born and trained in Cork. Much of his works reflect the history and politics of his own times, as well as the classical art of Greece and Rome. The strong moral and social content in his paintings show him to be an early Neo-Classicist, yet his life was thwarted by a strong romantic temperament, an argumentative nature and financial misfortune. The James Barry Exhibition will present an unequalled opportunity to re-examine Barry’s contribution to both the history of art and the history of his own times, with works on loan from key collections in Ireland, Europe and North America, as well as presenting recently rediscovered paintings. The exhibition will conclude with an international academic conference which will coincide with the bicentenary of Barry’s death. Crawford Art Gallery, Emmet Place.

Artists featured include John Shinnors, Stephen McKenna, Jill Dennis, Barrie Cooke, Martin Gale and Brian Bourke. Crawford Art Gallery, Emmet Place.

Weekly exhibitions by Cork-based artists in Bishop Lucey Park, Cork.
Bishop Lucey Park, off Grand Parade.

February to June 2006, artist Margaret Fitzgibbon will run after-
school art classes, every Wednesday 4-5 pm at the Crawford Art Gallery.
Age groups catered for are 6-9 years and 8-12 years.
The art classes are divided in modules of four weekly sessions and
each module caters specifically for an age group. Classes last one
hour and will draw on the Crawford gallery’s exhibitions. The
children will be encouraged to look at and discuss the artwork with
regard to ideas, materials, and production.
The modules will cover techniques of painting, drawing, collage and
construction, which parallel the recently updated primary school art
curriculum.
It is possible to book your child for more than one module, as the
content of each is different.
The fee is €40 per module all-inclusive.
