New Work
Donald Teskey was born in Limerick in 1956 and studied at the Limerick School of Art and Design. He is now based in Dublin. His bold, gestural paintings take as their subject the shorelines and seascapes of Ireland, and his surfaces, thick with impasto deal as much with the rough texture of weather beaten rocks or wind blown water as they tell of the fall of light
or colour. Vangard Gallery, Carey's Lane.

James Barry
James Barry (1741-1806) is perhaps the most significant artist to have been born and trained in Cork. Much of his works reflect the history and politics of his own times, as well as the classical art of Greece and Rome. The strong moral and social content in his paintings show him to be an early Neo-Classicist, yet his life was thwarted by a strong romantic temperament, an argumentative nature and financial misfortune. The James Barry Exhibition will present an unequalled opportunity to re-examine Barry's contribution to both the history of art and the history of his own times, with works on loan from key collections in Ireland, Europe and North America, as well as presenting recently rediscovered paintings. The exhibition will conclude with an international academic conference which will coincide with the bicentenary of Barry's death. Crawford Art Gallery, Emmet Place.

December 1 to 21
New Paintings
'Broadly speaking my concerns in painting deal with aspects of landscape and the practice of abstract painting. Increasingly the internal architecture of the composition and processes of application has come into focus alongside texture, light and colour to the extent that the intrinsic nature of the painting itself is a priority. Through the syntax of these elements a balance is achieved and the painting finds its resolve.' Ger Sweeney. Triskel Arts Centre, Tobin Street.

Spirit of Place
These new works by Frances Murphy are inspired by the Speaker's Corner in London where people gather to communicate through language to voice their diverse views. 'As resident curator I am aware dual function of Tigh filí; as both as a gallery space and a poets house, therefore an awareness of possibilities of representation inform my work. The work seeks to represent these twin worlds of open expression through words and visualisation. The plaster heads and mixed media explore associations and interrelationships between these two different art forms'. Gallery 9, Tigh Filí Gallery, Thompson House, MacCurtain St.

Labyrinths
'Labyrinths of Light' will be a unique opportunity for schools, Churches, community groups and businesses around the city to design, construct and facilitate a series of labyrinths. During the week December 15th to December 21st labyrinths will be in placed in a number of city centre locations indoor and outdoor, where the public will be invited to discover, walk and experience the labyrinth.

A number of these labyrinths will be accessible to the public for the duration of the week. Some will be lit at night and others will host performances and ceremonies carried by the groups who designed them.
