Exodus
Sebastião Salgado exhibits for the first time in Ireland. ³The
great Brazilian photographer, now 60, has given his life to long-term
projects - workers, landless peasants, children, migrants. He took
his camera where few photographers bothered or dared to go... His
last major project was Exodus. Over seven years, he took photographs
of migrants from Africa, Asia and South America, many of whom had
fled ethnic and religious conflict and genocidal regimes. Often his
subjects, particularly the children, stare at the camera - strong,
confrontational, giddy, laughing, heroic, even in their despair.²
Simon Hattenstone, The Guardian. O¹Callaghan Properties Offices,
21 Lavitt¹s Quay.
to August 10
Traces

of the century. Tues to Sun, 2pm-7pm. The Gallery with No Name, 107

³What We CallŠ a Cork Story²
³What we call... a Cork story² is a sound/video installation
based on the recorings of stories of growing up around Shandon in
the 1930¹s and 40¹s. Irreversible change, ageing, loss,
happiness and life cycles are the pervading themes of this installation
which invites Cork people to visit a forgotten past in an often-overlooked
landmark. Open 9am-5pm, Mon to Sat. Shandon Bells (St. Anne¹s

A, B, C Behind The Scenes
The project A, B, C Behind the Scenes by the artist Gabriel Lester
consists of different spatial installations around the entrance area
of the Lewis Glucksman Gallery. For this project, Lester uses locations
in and around the gallery which are not designed first and foremost
for exhibitions and makes the side-character of the areas the subject
of the installation. As the title suggests, Lester creates the sense
of being backstage on a theatre or film set but the narrative connection
between the three parts of the installation is enigmatic. Glucksman
Gallery, UCC, Cork.
to September 28
Paula Rego: Graphic Work from the Jane Eyre and Children¹s Crusade
series
According to writer Marina Warner ³Girlhood and its appetites
have inspired Paula Rego's picture making for over 30 years².
Rego is a painter of stories, her characters enact a variety of roles
and depict disquieting tensions below the surface. Her images often
hint at the darker side of childhood and the imagination, making the
exhibition a fascinating counterpoint to ŒThrough the Looking
Glass¹. Glucksman Gallery, UCC, Cork.
to September 28
Through The Looking Glass:
Childhood in Contemporary Photography
The artists in ŒThrough the Looking Glass¹ create pictures
of childhood that explore ideas of representation and truth. Some
of the images in this exhibition are straight photographs, others
have been digitally manipulated. Many of the artists refer to great
painters of the past Botticelli, Holbein and Bronzino
reminding us that photographs are always constructed and often blur
the boundaries between what is real and what is not. Glucksman Gallery,
UCC, Cork.

Matt Lamb
³We can recognize the people and events in these paintings of
the Gospel stories, but the overriding sense of narration in the paintings
is much more emotive than literary. Lamb says to see these paintings,
we must look through the eyes of a child with simplistic loveŠ
In adopting a childlike style in his work, Lamb can imbue the Gospel
stories with his own personal resonanceŠLamb is a story teller
and, in the tradition of mythic storytelling, he embellishes the basic
skeletal form of the tale he inherits. It is this embellishment that
allows the receivers of the story to in turn make in their own².
Maria Walsh, Art Historian. St. Fin Barres Cathedral.

an afterlife for the debris of our world beyond litter, you¹ll
love Mummenschanz. The creation of the mime-dance-mask-and-puppet
